Riverdale Condo Renovation
Sachi was hired to create a design plan for an Old Ottawa South kitchen. The requests from the home owner involved; update the look of the kitchen to improve resale value, instal stone counters and tile backsplash, instal new stainless appliances, create an island, recapture lost storage space, and instal a new faucet and sink.
Issues: The space is quite small, and both corners in the current kitchen are wasted. On the left of the kitchen sink, by the stove, under the counter, is the water heater for the unit, which takes up that space entirely. On the right of the sink, in the corner, no corner cabinet was initially placed there so it was empty space. Additionally the U shape of the cabinets blocked movement into the kitchen. The fridge was too large for the small 1 bedroom condo. The lighting was also inadequate and the cabinets dated.
Solution: To create a kitchen with broad appeal for good resale value we decided to go with dark blue cabinets, grey counters and a white subway tile backsplash. A 24” condo fridge and 24” stove are all this 1 bedroom unit needs. In addition, instead of going with a corner upper, which are always difficult to access, on either side of the sink 3’ wide by 40” tall uppers provide far more storage space and create some nice symmetry. This also means that there is more open space around the hood vent. There isn’t much space around the stove currently, this new layout will make that area feel more open and make it nicer to use the stove.
The lower cabinets on the window wall were also extended, and the island has two 24” drawer cabinets for lots of extra storage. The circular route in the layout is better for the flow of movement as well. A pendant over the island, under cabinet lighting, and an island overhang for two stools finish the new space nicely!
